New live performance venue

A VACANT building in North-bridge could soon become the new home for Perth comedians and live performers, with a proposal for a cabaret and comedy club recently given the go-ahead by the City of Perth.

The proposal involves a $100,000 interior refurbishment of the two-storey building, formerly The Viper Room nightclub, on the corner of James Street and Mountain Terrace.

Tentatively named the Red Windmill, the building will be divided into a downstairs bar with a distinct Australiana theme and an upstairs performance area

with a stage and seating for 100 people.

Owner and licence holder George Altuski said decor of the bar at the Red Windmill would feature historic photographs of WA pioneers, while Australian movies would be played on television screens throughout the venue.

Upstairs, live entertainers incl-uding comedians, mime artists and circus performers will delight the crowd. Mr Altuski said the new entertainment venue would offer a relaxed atmosphere for patrons looking for an alternative to the local nightclubs.

“The reason we chose Northbridge is because there is a large vacuum in the form of cabaret-style entertainment for people over 21 in that area,” Mr Altuski said.

“There are plenty of clubs that are all similar, that are vying for the same crowd, but for some couples and groups there is nowhere for them to relax.

“Perth needs more cabaret and live performance entertainment … it needs more than just a loud beat.”

Mr Altuski said he had researched the concept and area for the past 12 months and had waited for the right venue to become available. He hoped to have the Red Windmill up and running within six months.

In approving the application, the city council said alternative entertainment venues in North-bridge should be encouraged.

Mr Altuski now will be required to draw up a crowd control and noise management plan to submit to council for final approval.
