Western Australian Gaming and Wagering Commission has appointed Michael Schaper as its new chair, with Racing and Gaming Minister Reece Whitby making the announcement this morning.
The news comes after several reforms to strengthen regulatory frameworks were introduced after the report into the Perth Casino Royal Commission.
Dr Schaper has been appointed for a three-year term, while continuing to hold roles as Australian Institute of Company Directors national board member, Australian Taxation Office Shadow Economy Advisory Forum chair, and Energy and Water Ombudsman WA chair.
Prior to this, Dr Schaper was the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission deputy chair for almost 10 years.
Dr Schaper will replace Lanie Chopping, who had been working concurrently as Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries director general.
Mr Whitby welcomed Dr Schaper’s expertise in what he said was an important step following the royal commission.
“His extensive regulatory experience and high-profile roles across business, government and academic sectors instils confidence in the way forward for gambling regulation in WA,” Mr Whitby said.
He also acknowledged Ms Chopping for her work in leading reform during her time in the role.
It was also announced that Perth Casino Royal commissioner and former auditor general Colin Murphy, and consultant director Katie Hodson-Thomas, have been reappointed to the board of the Gaming and Wagering Commission until June 2025.
“It’s great to announce the reappointment of Colin Murphy and Katie Hodson-Thomas who are both strong assets,” Mr Whitby said.
