Valerie Gould's tenure atop the state's independent schools body will come to a close this year with UWA's director of student life stepping in as her replacement.

Ms Gould joined the Association of Independent Schools of WA in 1997 and rose to become its executive director in 2008.

She'll be replaced by Chris Massey, who has been with UWA since 2006.

Prior to that, he had worked with Cancer Council Western Australia and was a secondary teacher throughout the 1990s.

AISWA chair Alec O'Connell praised Mr Massey's financial acumen and educational experience in a statement.

"Coupled with an ability to drive strategic growth, lead, and implement change, and an ability to represent AISWA at a state, national and where required international level, Chris is well placed to oversee AISWA’s next period of growth and development," he said.

Mr Massey will commence at AISWA in September.
