New building act gets minister’s nod

A NEW Building Act to streamline regulations governing Western Australia’s building and construction industry will be fast tracked by Housing and Works Minister Fran Logan. Mr Logan said he had already endorsed the overarching principles embodied in a conceptual framework for the act, including an improved licensing process, the comprehensive registration of the building industry professionals and the clarification of designers’ and builders’ responsibilities. “This will introduce a nationally consistent framework of building surveyor qualifications and allow private sector building surveyors to participate in the regulatory process,” Mr Logan said. “The amendments will also clarify local authorities’ powers to deal with unapproved buildings. The force of the law should be brought to bear on people carrying out illegal building work.” The Department of Housing and Works and the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection will produce a public discussion document on the review of all building-related legislation in WA, and an appropriate government framework to respond to industry policy and regulation needs.
