National water win
Western Australia’s Water Corporation has won one of Australia’s most prestigious environmental awards for its Busselton Environmental Improvement Initiative Program.
The program has won the inaugural Award for Excellence in Marine and Coastal Management introduced by the United Nations Association of Australia.
The win comes less than a year after the corporation was awarded the 2003 Australian Greenhouse Challenge Gold Award.
The Busselton Environmental Improvement Initiate began in 1999 to cost-effectively reduce nutrient flow into Geographe Bay and to deter overspending on the Busselton wastewater system by the Water Corporation.
The Water Corporation invested heavily in infill sewerage and a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant.
Through the program $1 million was allocated over five years to the local dairy industry to subsidise process improvement projects by individual farmers on a 50-50 basis. So far $600,000 has been spent in matching contributions.
To date the corporation has signed agreements with 62 landowners in the Busselton region.
