Narrows work starts to pile on

PILING has begun on the Narrows Bridge Duplication project from the South Perth foreshore.

Leighton Contractors project manager Scott Martin said piling provided support for overhead structures including columns, piers and bridge decking.

“The first pile has been driven on the south side of Mill Point Road next to the existing south abutment,” Mr Martin said.

About 250 steel piles will be driven into the river bed and land approaches to secure the bridge’s foundations.

Work will be carried out between 7:00am and 5:00pm on weekdays and 7:00am to 3:00pm on Saturdays over the next four months.

Construction of bridge supports and decking will start soon in specially constructed casting bays next to the southern abutment. The new bridge should be operational by next August.
