NRW wins $123m mining project

NRW Holdings has secured stage one works on a new iron ore mine in the Northern Territory, marking its third project announcement for the year.

Under a $123 million contract, NRW will provide drill and blast, and load and haul services to Perth-based Nathan River Resources' Roper Bar operations over 33 months.

The project, commissioned in October last year, is a fully integrated pit-to-port operation expected to produce between 1.5 million tonnes per annum and 2mtpa (60 per cent iron) over an initial five-year period. Production ramp-up is nearing completion.

The scope of works also includes clearing and grubbing, top-soil and subsoil removal, and rehandling of ore stockpiles. NRW expects there will be about 55 site-based personnel at the peak of the project.

The contract comes one day after NRW, through its H2H joint venture with WBHO Infrastructure, was named the preferred proponent for extension works to Mitchell Freeway Southbound. 

NRW was also recently selected to work on Fortescue Metals Group’s Queens Valley project in the Pilbara under an $80 million contract. The project forms part of Fortescue’s Solomon Hub, where the Andrew Forrest-chaired business is expanding its iron ore operations.

NRW will complete the work through its RCR Mining Technologies business, which has subcontracted Primero Group for $30 million.

Shares in NRW were up 7.4 per cent at 1:26pm AEDT to trade at $2.98.
