The organisation has made a major contribution to the musical development of young Western Australians since it started as the WA Youth Orchestra Association. All members are younger than 25 and are engaged in full time music studies with a professional music teacher. The concert program for 2005 includes 14 performances by nine different orchestras and choirs, and will cover a wide range of music. Besides outstanding orchestral opportunities, the WAYMA offers a number of scholarships and prizes. The association has forged successful links with a number of corporate partners and was awarded the best long term business arts partnership with Woodside Energy by the state government in 2002.
