This community based organisation began as a mutual support group for bereaved Sudden Infant Death Syndrome parents and families during the 1970s. In 2000, the SIDS Foundation and the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Support Group joined to form SIDS and Kids. The organisation now offers support to families affected by the sudden and unexpected death of a baby or child, including losses through miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death and accidents. Since 1991, more than 4,000 Australian babies have been saved through education programs, funded primarily through community support. Funds raised from its annual Red Nose Day event allow for the provision of free professional grief counselling (call 9474 3544 during office hours) and a 24-hour, seven days a week, peer support line (freecall 1800 686 780) to assist people who have lost a child from conception to the age of 12.
