Morrison cut of the right cloth

PERTH clothing and retail company Morrison International Pty Ltd has won the Fremantle Business of the Year award for the second successive year. That makes it an outstanding five years for Morrison, which has also won the Retail Business Award for the past three years at the annual Fremantle First Business Awards. Morrison International Business Manager Richard Poulson said the awards success was recognition of the designer label’s ability to run an efficient business and provide a good product. “[The awards] demonstrate that we are doing the right thing,” he said. “We currently have 35 staff, four shops and over 110 wholesale accounts, with a few overseas. “We create classic, contemporary clothing and we use exclusive fabrics from Europe. We get a lot of mail order from Europe.” Mr Poulson said the company was interested in expanding in 2006 from its current position of four retail outlets, including a store in Sydney’s Oxford Street. “We look to branch out into Melbourne and also Queensland,” he said. “[Branching out] inter-nationally will be part of our five- to 10-year plan. It would be great to open a store on Oxford Street in London one day. “Part of our growth will be to build the retail base to be in line with our wholesale.” Mr Poulson and his wife, Kylie Radford, a designer, opened the flagship shop in Fremantle in January 2002, naming it Morrison after their kelpie-labrador cross. Zest Catering was another business to catch the judges’ eye, winning the Micro Commerce and Industry Business Award.Zest managing director Carol Gaby said the awards would continue to be of benefit to small businesses throughout the Fremantle area. “The awards are now more professional and respected,” she said. “It gives us a level of professionalism since small businesses can often go unnoticed.”
