More jobs go at South32

Mining group South32 has made about 270 roles redundant across its Australian and South African offices, on top of more than 1,000 job cuts earlier this year.

About 100 of the redundancies were Australian jobs, including 50 corporate roles.

A South32 spokesperson told Business News the redundancies were an outcome of the company’s review of operations earlier in the year.

“We’ve undertaken a review to look at how we provide functional support to our operations and that review follows the restructuring we had at our operations earlier this year,” the spokesperson said.

“(The redundancies) are an outcome of that review.

“We’ve looked at some of our challenged operations and restructured some of those, and we’re now looking at the way that we functionally support those operations.”

The spokesperson said the redundancies would help make the company’s operations more efficient and would reduce duplication in certain roles.

In February, the BHP Billiton spin-off announced 1,122 job cuts across its operations, including 390 at its Worsley Alumina operation in Western Australia, as part of a global cost-cutting drive.

It also made 620 jobs redundant at its South African manganese business.

South32 shares were 1.2 per cent higher to $1.61 each at midday.
