Mixed quarter for Wesfarmers coal output

Wesfarmers Ltd has had a mixed June quarter over its coal output with production increasing in two of its operations while its Premier mine recorded a 37 per cent decline from the previous quarter.

Coal production at Premier was reported at 561,000 tonnes with the quarter affected by lower sales to Verve Energy due to a maintenance shutdown at the Muja power station and the unplanned outage at the Collie A power station.

Wesfarmers said sales to Iluka Ltd will be lower as a result of the Varanus gas disruption.

Meanwhile production at the Curragh mine was 14.5 per cent higher at 2.4 million tonnes while output at the Bengalla operation was 52.7 per cent higher at 643,000tdue to operating in a more productive part of the mine sequence.

Last month the company said it estimated its pre-tax earnings to by cut by $20 million a month at the current level of gas supply.

The state's gas supply was cut by a third when a pipeline at Varanus Island was ruptured. Operator Apache expects to have partial gas supply up and running mid-August and full production by the end of the year.
