Matilda Bay builds up

THE Carlton & United-owned Matilda Bay brewing company is being built up to become WA’s premier specialty brewer.

CUB has spent $4 million in an upgrade of Matilda Bay Brewery.

The company’s brands now have a 40 per cent share of the WA beer market, dominating four categories including the mid-strength and full-strength beer markets.

However, Carlton & United WA general manager Graeme Wood said lockouts in some WA hotels had hindered the company’s growth.

To get around that, CUB has also become the biggest hotel operator in WA, boasting nine properties.

CUB vice-president beer business Mel Miles said the company had restructured its retail channel structure from a geographic one to a channel one.

This has helped CUB’s brand popularity grow 20 per cent or by 1.3 million cartons.
