Japan's defence minister is among key speakers slated to address a major defence and security conference at Optus Stadium in July.

This year's Indian Ocean Defence & Security Conference follows a two-year, pandemic-induced hiatus for the event, which was last held in 2019 at Crown Towers in Burswood.

That event featured Governor Kim Beazley, Premier Mark McGowan and Defence Minister Linda Reynolds as speakers.

Japan's defence minister Nobou Kishi will appear at this year's event alongside other foreign dignitaries, including India's ambassador to China, Shivshankar Menon.

Local business will also have a presence with BAE Systems Australia chief operating officer Darren Kirkby and Blue Ocean Monitoring group managing director Mike Deeks scheduled to make an appearance.

Defence Industries Minister Paul Papalia will deliver the state government's keynote address.

In addition to those speakers, businesses in the resources sector will also be given the chance to showcase their wares, with Fugro set to exhibit an unmanned surface vessel at the event.

"Companies like Fugro are developing cutting-edge technology for the WA resources sector that is leaps and bounds ahead of anything anywhere in the world," Mr Papalia said.

"The military applications for an autonomous vessel are next level."

Today's news follows a spate of defence announcements fom the federal goverment ahead of the May 21 election, including $4.3 billion earmarked for a dry dock facility in Henderson.

No new funding was set aside for the project in the FY22/23 budget, with funding to be drawn entirely from the Department of Defence's coffers.
