A NEW advisory group consisting of 28 past and present health industry professionals has been established in Perth to support the development of sector leaders in Western Australia.

The group, known as the board of reference, brings together health professionals from the private and public sector and academia, and includes former ministers of health, former directors general of health and hospital chief executives.

Its members will include five former health ministers from across the political divide, namely Labor’s Jim McGinty, Ian Taylor and Bob Kucera, and Liberals Kevin Prince and Graham Kierath.

It also has three former directors general of the health department – Neale Fong, his successor Mike Daube, and the most recent director general, Peter Flett, who resigned last year after a dispute with the state government over health funding.

The Australian College of Health Services Executives (ACHSE), whose role is to promote excellence in health service managers, launched the group.

The college’s senior vice-president, Dr Fong, said the establishment of the board of reference was a new step for the sector in WA.

“The board of reference will provide support for the development of health leaders and bring cross sector collaboration to highlight significant health leadership issues for WA,” Dr Fong said in a statement.

The board will aim to provide direction to the college in WA and assist in increasing its profile and relevance.

Dr Fong will be the convener of the board of reference, which will be run as an independent board.

Industry members serving on the board include: Hollywood Hospital executive director Kevin Cass-Ryall; St John of God Health Care & Bethanie Group Inc director Ivor Davies; Brightwater Care Group chief executive Penny Flett; Silver Chain Nursing Association chief executive Chris McGowan; MercyCare Group chief Jeff Simper; and St John of God Health Care Group chief executive Michael Stanford.
