THE Note’s heart rarely bleeds for lawyers. But we’ll pull out the violin just this once because it helps illustrate a point. The subject of our concern is the WA Law Society and its sudden reality check, or should that be realty cheque. The society – which performs an important role in WA – has been presented with a tripling of rental costs for its 89 St Georges Terrace premises, with lease costs rising from $210/sqm to $650/sqm next year - a $40,000 additional cost. The Note just wishes more in the corporate sector would follow the society’s good example in not passing on costs. In a letter to members it says the majority will not see a fee increase from the current level of $35. Phew, that must be a relief!
