Lighter note: Lake Ballard sculptures to stay

THEY typify the remoteness of Western Australia’s desert interior and now the 51 statues of Lake Ballard are a permanent feature, with British sculptor Antony Gormley gifting his artwork to WA. Originally installed for the 2003 Perth International Arts Festival, the metal figures are based on the residents of the town of Menzies. The process of casting each figure took 40 hours, while the installation took a team of 18 volunteers four days to complete. The state government has pledged $500,000 for the maintenance of the site, to safeguard the figures and ensure a ‘high level of visitor amenity’.
