Lifting confidence: Boom Logistics delivers certainty in WA’s major infrastructure projects

As Western Australia continues to roll out major infrastructure projects and upgrades, contractors face rising complexity in both project design and delivery. From widening freeways to replacing level crossings, one crucial factor to these projects’ success is getting lifting operations right from the outset.

For Boom Logistics, success has come from redefining what it means to be a crane and logistics company. Time and again, Boom has proven itself as a trusted strategic lifting partner for the major construction giants operating across Australia. Instead of simply supplying equipment on demand, Boom Logistics positions its clients for success by providing visionary foreplanning expertise in the early stages, and delivering precise engineering solutions that both maximise value and minimise risk.

Timing matters

“The real value comes from everything we do before the actual lifting work,” says Lester Fernandez, Director of Operations for Boom Logistics. “We prepare months in advance with our clients, from pre-planning and surveying the area, to navigating ground bearing pressure. There is an immense amount of engineering technical know-how that goes into pre-lifting to ensure a successful execution.”

Boom’s early involvement in major projects such as the Victoria Park to Canning Level Crossing Removal Project, Leach Highway and Welshpool Road Interchange, the Mitchell Freeway Extension, and Albany Ring Road has helped project partners avoid costly late-stage rework, ensuring smarter and safer lifting outcomes.

“There is a complexity to these projects that requires Boom to be engaged from the very beginning of the project,” says Dave Barfield, Regional Manager of Boom Logistics. “We have had instances where we’ve sat with clients’ planners and logistics teams to redesign project specifications, rethink access, and work around environmental and infrastructural constraints. Our engineering input at the early stages sets the foundation for the most precise and risk-mitigated lifting operation possible.”

Changing perceptions

What truly differentiates Boom Logistics from traditional lifting providers is the mindset shift it has helped to drive across the infrastructure sector. Historically, lifting operations were treated as a transactional service, with contractors engaging crane providers late in the project cycle and passing on much of the associated risk.

That model is quickly becoming outdated due to Boom’s early engagement model that embeds lifting expertise and advisory into the design phase – providing foresight and engineering input well before the crane arrives onsite. It’s a model that industry partners have grown to appreciate and value. That shift, Mr Fernandez says, is driven by results.

“It took a real change in mindset from alliance partners and contractors to trust that our input could make a difference,” Mr Fernandez said. “Now they have seen how we deliver results by being embedded as a strategic partner in the infrastructure space. That’s the fundamental shift that has occurred – we are no longer just a subcontractor but a key partner in the broad scheme of things.

“Time and time again, we’ve delivered complex lifts safely and efficiently. That track record builds trust, and once clients experience the value we bring, they come back to us because they’ve seen how it improves the project.”

Assurance and certainty

Within a major infrastructure project, success can hinge on the actual lift. However, that lift is often the culmination of months of careful planning leading to the critical moment where everything must go right. This is the reason why contractors turn to Boom Logistics – not just for lifting expertise, but for certainty.

“Clients come to us for the assurance that, no matter what happens, we can deliver,” said Mr Fernandez. “It’s not just about having a crane available – it’s about having the built-in redundancy to ensure that in any scenario, we have the capacity, the capability, the people, and the equipment to respond.”

Boom’s national fleet includes 40 travel towers and over 280 mobile cranes, ranging from hybrid models to some of the largest all terrain cranes in the country - including two of its seven 750/800-tonne rated capacity units currently operating in Western Australia. With the ability to mobilise equipment across the country as needed, Boom’s investment in capacity and capability gives contractors confidence in the face of complexity having access to such a wide range of equipment.  Whether it’s a scheduled lift on a Tier One project, or a heavy-lift booking at short notice, Boom’s ability to deliver and back itself with contingency is unmatched in the local market.

That confidence was tested and proven in the Victoria Park to Canning Level Crossing Removal Project, dubbed the largest public transport infrastructure project in WA with a total budget of $1.62 billion, which demanded absolute precision and zero tolerance for delay. This project went on to be considered for the Project of the Year from the Crane Industry Council of Australia.

“What sets us apart is the certainty we bring,” says Ben Pieyre, CEO of Boom Logistics. “Boom’s clients have that confidence in us because of the consistency we bring from day one. With the highest standards of safety and the right equipment, we provide the assurance that every lift will be done safely, efficiently, and without compromise.”
