Lend Lease has been selected to expand the Kwinana Freeway south of Roe Highway, in a $62 million contract announced by the state and federal governments today.

The freeway will have a third southbound lane added from Roe Highway to Armadale Road, with construction projected to start in September.

The westbound merger from Roe Highway onto the freeway will also be upgraded.

Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs said the project would slash travel times.

“The Kwinana Freeway southbound between Roe Highway and Armadale Road no longer has the capacity to meet today’s demands, which is impacting on the economic output of Perth’s road network,” Mr Briggs said.

“This upgrade along with our other multi-billion dollar infrastructure investments like the Perth Freight Link and Gateway WA will unlock the productive capacity of Western Australia and create thousands of new jobs.”

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the 4.2-kilometre section had experienced strong traffic growth.

“Large numbers of vehicles exit at Armadale Road, so the third southbound lane should improve the existing peak hour congestion conditions,” he said.

“Reducing congestion is vital to improving productivity, lowering business costs and improving the economy to create jobs.”

The government said completion of the Fremantle Outer Harbor project in 2025 would also increase freight demand on the freeway.
