The former Leighton Railways marshalling yards have moved another step closer to becoming a lively beachside village, following the sale of an oceanfront lot within the State Government's four hectare site to private developers.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced the sale of a 6,550sqm lot to Leighton Shores Pty Ltd for approximately $23 million in a joint venture between Multiplex and Rockingham Park.
Ms MacTiernan said Leighton Shores planned to invest more than $100 million in a complex that would deliver up to 50 contemporary apartments at Leighton, adding to Mirvac's plans for 170 apartments and terrace homes.
"Leighton Shores is proposing a quality mix of apartments, within walking distance of the passenger rail network and on the doorstep of a pristine beach," she said.
"This development, coupled with Mirvac's $400 million project, will significantly boost beachside living options in Perth and provide an exciting place for the wider community to enjoy."
Multiplex will manage the project and build the development on behalf of the Leighton Shores joint venture partners.
Multiplex Apartments managing director Chris Palandri said the company would deliver an exciting beachfront development of the highest calibre in keeping with the unique locality, to suit different family types and people of all ages.
"We are excited to be part of such an iconic redevelopment project which will see the area transformed into a lively new beachside community," Mr Palandri said.
"The Leighton Shores development will showcase a range of water and energy efficient design principles, and we have worked closely with renowned Perth-based architects Jones Coulter Young Architects for their local heritage and environmental expertise."
Construction works are expected to commence early next year, with the first buildings due for completion in 2010.
The Minister said that as part of the site's redevelopment, the Curtin Avenue extension had recently opened, relocating major north-south traffic away from the busy beachfront area.
"This realignment of the road was a major outcome of community consultation and will enable the completion of works on the western side of the development," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Access to the Leighton Beach cafe, surf club and beach parking will also be easier and safer."
Community access between the North Fremantle train station and the beach area will soon be improved with the provision of a signalised pedestrian crossing along the new section of Curtin Avenue, adjacent to the train station and paths through the new development.
