THE Imax cinema proposed for the Perth City Council’s redeveloped Lake Street car park is back on track.
The cinema was to be operated by Sydney-based cinema operator Cinema Plus but that company went into administration.
It had taken a 20-year lease on the Lake Street property.
The building was bought from developer Multiplex by the MTM Entertainment Trust, which owns Imax cinemas around Australia.
The trust is believed to be going into partnership with the Canadian-owned Imax Cinema company.
Imax will operate the cinema while MTM will take care of the property.
The survival of the Lake Street Imax cinema threatens the viability of the City West-based Omni Theatre.
The Omni is owned by the Hong Kong-based Hang Lung Development Co.
Hang Lung director John Rogers said the theatre’s future was under a cloud because it was struggling to “look after itself”.
Mr Rogers said the another cinema’s entrance to the market could sound the death knell for the Omni.
