Former police minister and Labor member for Balcatta, John Kobelke, has been appointed to head a review of the Swan Valley’s planning framework, Planning Minister Rita Saffioti announced today.

Mr Kobelke, who retired at the March 2013 state election after serving in parliament for 24 years, will review planning frameworks including the Swan Valley Protection Bill and development plan.

The review will look at four major topics, including tourism initiatives in the region and right-to farm laws.

It will additionally look at the potential creation of a statutory body to manage the valley.

Ms Saffioti said Mr Kobelke understood the need for community engagement in the region.

"I have asked Mr Kobelke to examine the provisions in the draft Swan Valley Development Plan relating to subdivision, agriculture and tourism,” she said.

"I am also keen to ensure a strong advocate for the Swan Valley through a statutory board or committee.

"This review and consultation process will ensure that the people who call the Swan Valley home have a real say about the future of this highly valued region."
