A John Holland and GHD joint venture has won a $360 million contract to sink a section of city rail line as part of the Perth City Link.

The joint venture was shortlisted to sink the line along with a Brookfield Multiplex and Lang O'Rourke joint venture in September.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the consortium would work in alliance with the Public Transport Authority.

"John Holland and GHD have submitted a proposal which meets the budget parameters set by government; their proposal also confirms they can deliver this critical component of the Perth City Link by 2014," Mr Buswell said in a statement.

Mr Buswell said the consortium would immediately work on planning and design for the project, with the first significant work to begin at the station later this year.

The minister said the PTA had already started preparation works at and around Perth Station.

"Work for the $249 million Wellington Street Bus Station project will occur under a separate contract, with expected completion in 2016," Mr Buswell said.

The state government has allocated $336 million to the sinking of the railway and the Wellington Street Bus Station, while the City of Perth has kicked in $38 million.

The Federal Government earmarked $236 million for the rail component of the project in its 2009-10 Budget.
