A $176 million construction contract for the $1.12 billion NorthLink WA project has been awarded to John Holland, with work set to begin on the major Tonkin Highway upgrade mid-year.

John Holland was named the preferred bidder for stage 1 of the NorthLink WA project in November last year.

It is the first construction contract to be awarded for the project.

The federal government is contributing $894 million to the NorthLink WA project, with the state government assisting with $223 million.

Major Projects Minister Paul Fletcher said the contract was a significant step in the vision of the NorthLink WA project.

“The Tonkin Highway is a vital link for regional traffic movements to commercial and industrial areas such as Malaga, Kewdale, Perth Airport and the Perth CBD, and through to the port and Kwinana industrial areas,” he said.

“The southern section from Guilford Road to Reid Highway will deliver new intersections at Collier Road and Morley Drive.

“A flyover to take Benara Road over Tonkin Highway and upgrades of Tonkin Highway north of Guilford Road to freeway standard of six lanes are also included.”

He said construction was expected to begin in the middle of the year.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said fewer traffic lights meant vehicles would keep moving and travel times would improve, resulting in less congestion on local roads.

“The freeway-standard, free-flowing link from Collier Road through to Reid Highway via the Tonkin Highway grade separations will greatly ease traffic growth on local roads and improve four of the state’s top 15 most dangerous intersections,” Mr Nalder said.

John Holland was selected ahead of three other shortlisted groups – Leighton Contractors, McConnell Dowell, and a joint venture comprising Perth company Georgiou Group and York Civil.

The second stage of NorthLink WA will provide a new 37-kilometre highway from the intersection of Reid and Tonkin highways in Malaga through the Swan Valley to Muchea.
