International study awards for UWA graduates

Two graduates from The University of Western Australia are the only Western Australian students to be awarded prestigious General Sir John Monash Awards to study internationally. Hsien Chan, a 24-year-old graduate of Medicine hopes to advance knowledge of asthma management, and Science and Engineering graduate Sally Thompson intends to improve the management of water resources in disadvantaged communities. Mr Chan will study for a Doctor of Philosophy degree at Oxford University while Ms Thompson will undertake PhD studies at Duke University in the United States. Mr Chan won an Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy Grant in 2004 and a John Flynn Scholarship (Rural Medicine) and wants to research the role that particular cells play in a range of allergies.
