One of Australia’s biggest installers of rooftop solar systems will exit the market, with low margins biting.

Infinite Energy was started in Perth by businessman Aidan Jenkins in 2009, and in 2019 was acquired by Sumitomo Corporation, which owns part stakes in the Bluewaters coal power plant and Newgen Kwinana gas plant.

At that time, the company had 60 staff, had completed 15,000 solar panel installations for residential and business clients, and claimed to be the fourth largest installer in the country.

Yesterday, Infinite was contacting suppliers to say it would cease selling rooftop solar systems.

But the company will continue to complete its pipeline of installation contracts, and said it would continue support services.

Retailing contracts and power purchase agreements will also continue to operate until plans for those business units are reviewed.

Infinite Energy Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sutherland said in a statement that it had been a very difficult decision to cease selling rooftop solar and battery systems given the excellent personnel, suppliers and customers involved with the business for many years.

The dynamics of the sector had changed, and the pandemic had interrupted national expansion plans, the statement said.

“While the WA solar market continues to add rooftop solar capacity, establishing a sustainable business model that can support a quality product offering in a highly saturated, low margin and low barrier-to-entry solar market has proved a challenge,” Mr Sutherland said.

Last year, the Australian Energy Market Operator projected rooftop solar capacity to grow 8 per cent a year in the state's main power grid through to 2031
