In Brief: Blakiston tops lawyer survey

BLAKISTON & Crabb partner Michael Blakiston has been rated as one of the top 20 mining lawyers worldwide, in a survey by London-based publisher Who’s Who Legal. Mr Blakiston, whose West Perth firm specialises in mining law, was one of seven Perthbased lawyers featured in The International Who’s Who of Mining Lawyers 2008, which listed a total of 235 practitioners. He was the most highly nominated individual in the Australian research and the only Antipodean lawyer to make the top 20 list. Other Perth lawyers recognised as leaders in the field were Clayton Utz’s Geoff Simpson and Peter Wiese, Allens Arthur Robinson’s Nic Tole, Minter Ellison’s Andrew Thompson, Blake Dawson’s Leigh Warnick and Mallesons Stephen Jaques’ Alan Murray. The Who’s Who rankings contrasted with the recently published Best Lawyers Australia, prepared by US polling business Best Lawyers for The Australian Financial Review. Both surveys are based on peer review but the results are very different. Mr Blakiston does not rate a mention in the Best Lawyers listing. Messrs Wiese, Tole and Murray were the only lawyers to make both lists.
