Import films – export talent

HOLLYWOOD productions are trickling into Perth thanks to local company RookPark Pty Ltd.

Headed by internationally renowned sound expert Mal Luker, the company is currently involved in sound production for Warner Bros. Dungeons and Dragons film using ABC’s Studio 620 and crew.

Mr Luker said RookPark had already brought in film work from the US including Lucas Films’ Young Indiana Jones and Disney’s Aladdin.

“These films have been mixed by myself with the exception of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers which was mixed by Dan Wallin, one of Hollywood’s best,” Mr Luker said.

“The ABC crew provided all the technical support for this and, in many cases, video lock as well.

“The Dungeons and Dragons project is a neg pickup through Warner Bros.

“A neg pickup is when an independent producer makes a movie on his own and sells it to the studio.

“The studio comes up with the money and distribution,” he said.

Mr Luker’s role in the project is scoring mixer, a US term for film recording and mixing engineer.

The movie score will be played by the WA Philharmonic Orchestra, comprising WA Symphony Orchestra members.

“I can’t express enough how good the WASO, who often provide music for us, are for this type of project,” Mr Luker said.

“We will be recording members of the WASO in Studio 620 and I will do the mixing in Los Angeles.

“Karl Akers of the ABC Radio studios, who is usually in the role of sound engineer, will coordinate the technical support for this movie.”

Mr Luker is currently in LA finishing “a very cool movie” called The Visitors but considers Perth his “adopted home”.

“RookPark was started by myself and Brendon Darby, my best buddy, who agreed it was possible to bring Hollywood productions to Perth,” Mr Luker said.

“In the beginning, everyone thought we were nuts.

“Without Brendon, I could never have been able to put this together.

“A reputation takes a long time to build up in Hollywood and, because I am now based there, I am able to get the right people interested in coming to Perth on a more regular basis and using our wonderful Aussie talent.”

“The ABC Studio 920 crew always knock themselves out to make it work.”
