IN THE NEWS: WA developments win national awards

TWO Western Australian developments have been recognised as the best in the country at the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s National Awards for Excellence held last week. Stockland’s 16-hectare South Beach development near Fremantle was awarded the best medium density development in Australia, while Allegro at The Peninsula Burswood by Mirvac received the award for best high-density development. Stockland first bought an interest in the South Beach project in mid 2002 with a view to developing the site with a mix of individual residential lots and group dwelling sites. A stage one integrated seed housing site consists of 10 homes on 250 square metre lots, located centrally on a green-spine parkland. Mirvac’s Allegro was the first high-rise apartment tower to be constructed at the Peninsula and was developed in joint venture with Burswood Ltd. The 17-storey tower, forming part of the central Plaza, comprises 80 residential apartments, three live/ work townhouses, two maisonettes and two commercial spaces, one of which is a Mirvac sales office and the other a gourmet cafe/ delicatessen. UDIA WA chief executive Debra Goostrey said the awards were an outstanding achievement for WA, proving the state was leading the way in the provision of quality, medium and high density products that were becoming a popular.
