THE controversy over the Varanus Island gas explosion has eased somewhat since gas production resumed in August, yet some major gas users have still not been getting any gas. Varanus is home to two joint ventures, both operated by Apache Energy. The John Brookes joint venture resumed partial production at the start of August, two months after the original pipeline rupture, and has gradually lifted output since then. In contrast, the Harriet joint venture, which supplies the Burrup Fertilisers plant, among other customers, finally resumed oil production this week. First gas production from the Harriet joint venture is not anticipated until late November
