Holland lays solid foundation

Corporate acquisitions by and within construction and engineering group John Holland Pty Ltd – chaired by WA business identity Janet Holmes à Court – have laid a solid foundation for project development and growth.

The recent acquisition by Leighton Holdings of a 70 per cent interest in John Holland, combined with the project development groundwork laid over the past couple of years, will allow the company to enter its second 50 year span with “exciting opportunities” as well as a few challenges.

According to John Holland managing director Bill Wild, the group is in preferred or short-listed positions on a number of major multi-million dollar projects.

These include the Alice Springs to Darwin railway, expected to start at the end of the year, the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Brisbane Light Rail project and the replacement Nuclear Research Facility at Lucas Heights in Sydney.

“One of our challenges, of course, is to convert these and other opportunities into successful, profitable contracts,” Mr Wild said.

Among a number of initiatives implemented to improve its business competitiveness was the

recent acquisition by John Holland’s rail division of the Australian operations of the US-based rail and maintenance equipment company, Loram.

The acquisition will see John Holland take on all Loram’s Australian-based contracts, assets and employees.

The company has contracts in Victoria, South Australia and WA. As part of the acquisition, John Holland has a five-year arrangement with Loram to provide technology support and marketing assistance to the company.
