ABOUT 1700 Optus workers, including 50 in Perth, will be sent on three weeks’ annual leave this Christmas as the telecommunications giant continues to look for savings opportunities.
In a company first, the Optus business division, which handles corporate accounts, will be away from December 24 until January 12.
The latest strategy comes in the wake of Operation Win Through, a cost-cutting and structural reform program whereby the major telco slashed hundreds of jobs nationally.
An Optus spokesman said the new annual leave strategy was not part of Operation Win Through, which wound up last month, and that the company was simply adopting a common business practice. The spokesman could not disclose how much Optus would save by introducing the measure.
