Expressions of interest to lease Rechabites Hall and the Perth Hostel in Northbridge open today, marking the final stage of the state government’s $6 million revitalisation project for William Street.

Planning Minister John Day said Rechabites Hall, a former theatre and bank, could be used for retail, food and beverage, and creative spaces, while Perth Hostel would suit offices or boutique accommodation.

Rechabites Hall was built in the 1920s and closed in 2008.

Mr Day said new tenancies in both properties would add to the vibrancy and cultural identity of William Street.

Interest was expected from hospitality professionals and developers with experience, financial backing and an interest in building on Northbridge’s character, he said.

“The successful bidder will share our vision for William Street and offer uses that will connect arts and cultural events, activate the streetscape and integrate with Northbridge,” Mr Day said.

The state government, through the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority, has restored 16 properties on William Street since 2009. Along with upgraded public areas, the area is now occupied by creative industries, restaurants and galleries.

Mr Day said the government’s investment of $6 million had attracted private investors, with new industries, restaurants and businesses opening in the area.

Expressions of interest close on December 18.
