After more than 26 years driving trucks, long-distance driver Bill Hassett from Beechboro is the 2005 Dangerous Goods Safe Driver of the Year. Mr Hassett was named Dangerous Goods Safe Driver of the Year at the Transport Forum’s 2005 Transport Industry Awards held recently. The award – sponsored by the Resources Safety Division of the Department of Consumer and Employment Protection – is open to professional employees or owner-operators hauling dangerous goods. Mr Hassett, who is employed by Marsue Transport in Guildford, drives a triple road train loaded with flammable gases. He has clocked up close to 10 million accident-free kilometres in his 26 and a half years as a dangerous goods driver, and has apparently been involved in only one traffic accident – 10 years ago – in which the other driver was at fault.
