Halcyon Group Limited (ASX:HCY) announced the award of the Nickel Extraction Scoping Study contract to engineering company BatteryLimits Pty Ltd.
The study will go ahead in parallel with a separate feasibility study for a mining operation at Canegrass early next year.
Halcyon commenced the Nickel Extraction Scoping Study last month with the appointment of Bruce Wedderburn as Feasibility Study Manager. BatteryLimits will undertake the high level Scoping Study work aimed at identifying process options for a nickel extraction facility for the Canegrass Nickel Cobalt Project.
It will examine major infrastructure requirements, identify long lead items and provide basic equipment specifications as well as options for water supply, calcrete/limestone and sulphuric acid. Other work planned will include site survey work, geotechnical studies and selection of the preliminary site. The Study will also identify operating costs, capital cost estimates, preliminary implementation, commissioning, ramp-up schedule, initial pad design and preliminary environmental requirements.
BatteryLimits is a Perth based engineering company formed in early 2005. The Company's management has extensive experience in laterite nickel studies and provides on-going specialist strategic project support for Minara Resources' Murrin Murrin nickel operation, including scoping study work for its Heap Leach project. The company has already undertaken a number of significant risk and project management roles including the process engineering for the Definitive Feasibility Study for Moly Mines' 20 Mt/a Spinifex Ridge molybdenum project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
BatteryLimits Managing Director, Phil Hearse has been providing independent advice to mining companies for 21 years as Managing Director of the metallurgical consultancy Normet Pty Ltd, and as Director Advisory and Principal Consultant with GRD Minproc Ltd. Nigel Briggs has specialist nickel process engineering expertise, having worked in laterite nickel operations and projects for seven years.
Halcyon Managing Director, Iggy Tan welcomed the contract award and said that the Scoping Study would help Halcyon to decide on the process route and size of the nickel extraction operation going forward "The study is expected to be completed by late Quarter 1, 2008 and if positive, should support a pre-feasibility study."
