Gold Road Resources and Gold Fields' $621 million Gruyere mine officially opened today, with Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston saying the project would create around 250 jobs over the next 12 years.

Gold Road Resources and Gold Fields' $621 million Gruyere mine officially opened today, with Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston saying the project would create around 250 jobs over the next 12 years.

The Gruyere mine is located about 200 kilometres east of Laverton in the north-eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia and is operated and run by Gold Fields.

Mining commenced in November 2018 with first ore mined in January, and first gold poured in June.

Gold Fields said the Gruyere mine is ramping up to an annual average production of 300,000 ounces, with vice president Australasia Stuart Matthews saying the company was excited to add the project to its existing WA portfolio.

Gold Fields has a demonstrated commitment to Western Australia and Gruyere is a good example of a gold mining operation which provides long-term jobs, sustained industry investment and ongoing spend and support to the local economy,” Mr Matthews said.

He paid tribute to Gold Road, whose exploration team discovered the orebody.

Gold Road managing director Duncan Gibbs also thanked Gold Fields for overseeing the safe construction of Gruyere.

“We made the discovery six years ago and today we have opened a greenfield operation that is the first to produce gold in the prospective Yamarna Belt,” he said.

“Gold Road is proud that our exploration success has led to the creation of employment and contracting opportunities in regional Western Australia, including for the Yilka people with whom we have forged a strong relationship.

“Our focus now is to work with our partner Gold Fields to deliver sustained value from Gruyere while our exploration team is focused on further unlocking the gold potential of the Yamarna Belt.”

Four contracts have been awarded to Indigenous enterprises, focused on major and minor plant, labour hire and cleaning services.

Gruyere is the first operating mine on Yilka country.
