GHD environmental engineer Sabina Fahrner, who won the Australian Water Association undergraduate award for WA with her thesis, ‘Groundwater Nitrate Removal Using a Bioremediation Trench’, has also been named national runner-up.
Ms Fahrner worked on her thesis at the University of Western Australia, where she completed a double degree - Bachelor of Science, Land and Water Management, and Bachelor of Engineering, Environmental (Hon) - last year.
Her thesis addressed the innovative treatment of contaminated groundwater, demonstrating that groundwater bioremediation trenches using sawdust as a carbon source, effectively remove nitrate from groundwater, thereby protecting receiving waters.
Ms Fahrner recently joined fast-growing management, engineering and environment consultants, GHD.
GHD has taken on board 16 engineers and scientists in the past year.
