Greg Hunt

PHARMACIST Greg Hunt has introduced a new concept in retail pharmacy to Western Australia, with his four stores across Perth offering the public large and permanent discounts on products, with a larger range and retail space than most. Greg’s Discount Chemist concept is already changing the face of pharmacy retailing in WA and is forcing the industry to focus much more on the prices and value it delivers to customers. Mr Hunt first worked in pharmacy at age 15 and knew he wanted to run his own business. After graduating from university in 1994, he trained in retail and hospital pharmacy to secure an MPS certification, which required 2,000 hours of retail work. He and his wife changed the face of retailing in the local area with radio advertising, branded vehicles and a range of other promotional and pricing campaigns. After moving to Perth, Mr Hunt bought and sold several pharmacies over the follow-ing decade while closely watching the development of the discount operations in the east. He made the decision in 2003 to create a new branded discount chain for WA and spent the next year seeking appropriate locations and developing his fun, family friendly brand. His first store opened in mid 2005 and was an immediate success. Research within his stores has since found that people are prepared to drive up to 30 kilometres to access discounts, and there is even demand for a delivery service. Mr Hunt is prepared to “do anything that needs to be done” in the business, from helping with advertising cam-paigns, driving a delivery truck and helping stock shelves. He is involved in communities through his stores and contributes to a children’s charity.
