Grain harvest surges to more than 14mt

Grain handler CBH Group has reported a late surge in grain deliveries, pushing the state’s total harvest to an unexpectedly large total in excess of 14 million tonnes.

CBH said that at 3pm today, total receivals ticked past 14 million tonnes, with another several hundred thousand tonnes still expected to come in.

One week ago, it had been anticipating the total harvest would be about 13.6 million tonnes.

The 2003-04 harvest holds the CBH record for highest grain intake for WA with 14.7 million tonnes delivered.

Many regions across the state have set records in the current season, though CBH has also warned that late rains have damaged crop quality in some areas, which will affect returns to growers.

Kwinana zone receivals have reached 6.5mt and zone manager Brett Jeffrey said there is possibly another couple of hundred thousand tonnes still to come so the zone will be pushing almost 7 million tonnes once completed.

Albany zone has received 2.4mt and, like Kwinana, CBH anticipates about 200,000 tonnes are still to come.

Geraldton zone has reached a record 3.5mt with only minimal grain left to come in while at Esperance, wet weather is hampering efforts to get the final 50-100,000 tonnes harvested.
