Port Hedland
A marina for 20 to 45 boats is a joke. We have waited all this time to be given a toy to keep us quiet so it looks like they are holding up their promise. Very disappointed

Western Australia
That's very disappointing for the historic town of Port Hedland. Limiting residential development is sterilising the best part of town to live, work and play. What a shame!

The timing of the announcement is odd - as if building a marina and capping the population is going to stop us noticing all the dust The site is completely exposed. In a major cyclone it will be washed away. Hedland is long overdue for a major direct hit. Last one was in 1939 when the water was 1.5m deep in the Pier Hotel - photos etc on BOM website under storm surge. The spoil bank is loose sand - you need big heavy rock and lots of it. The spoil bank, yacht club, caravan park, apartments etc will be completely destroyed in a 1939 event. If they get marine engineers to look at it, instead of graphic architects / developers / politicians they will find they need another $100mill for the seawall to protect it. It was for 200 pens and now we are down to only 20 pens. I agree it is a joke. The only way the $ stack up if they can put apartments hotels etc around the marina. How does that work with capping the population and living in dust. Much better location further east at Cooke Pt which has some reef to protect it, less dust, room to expand in future. I sent a letter explaining all this to the council and DOT a few years ago and would be welcome to share it if interested. Contact me via Roam Marine. I have no connection to Hedland other than I help companies build marine structures like the Hunt Pt Tug Harbour

How the premier can destroy a 120-year-old Western Australian town at the bequest of the resources sector is bordering on criminal. The state may be able to close Wittenoom as they owned the land. In Port Hedland they say that no compensation will be paid to the 500 private property owners. See porthedlanddust@jtsi.wa.gov.au to see that statement with your own eyes. It is unbelievable that property rights can be abused in this manner without any support or argument from the mayor and Council of Port Hedland. Maybe a class action could be the way to go.

Port Hedland
If you want a boat the same colour as the cars in Port Hedland (covered in dust from industry in the area) then park your boat at this marina. Really, who wants their asset worth tens of thousands to look like those cars? Careful you don't wind up with a $112 million red elephant.
