The awarding of contracts for the massive Gorgon gas project is gathering pace with operator Chevron so far handing out about $7 billion worth of work, including the latest $810 million contract to Dutch group Boskalis.

Boskalis Australia, a subsidiary of Netherlands-headquartered Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V, secured a €500 million ($A810 million) contract from Chevron, in cooperation with the Kellogg joint venture.

Under the contract, Boskalis will design and construct the port, which includes a material offloading facility, at Barrow Island.

The company will also construct various dredging and marine contracting activities, a roll-on-roll-off facility, 200 metres of quay walls and mooring dolphins.

"This project fits well within our strategic focus on the oil and gas market segment and our expansion into marine contracting activities," Boskalis chief executive Peter Berdowski said.

"After having worked intensively with the client in an "early contractor involvement" capacity, we look forward to making a significant contribution to the Gorgon development."

Work is set to start early next year and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011.

Boskalis' contract is the latest in a string of contracts awarded by Chevron, which has been handing out contracts before the Gorgon partners, including ExxonMobil and Shell, announced the go-ahead to the $43 billion project last month.

The Kellogg JV, led by Kellogg Brown and Root and includes Perth-based Clough, JGC Corporation and Hatch, were awarded Gorgon's largest contract with a $2.7 billion engineering, procurement and construction management contract for the downstream and logistics portion of the project.

Gorgon is expected to come online in 2014.
