Golden Gecko winners named

HISMELT, Minara Resources and Rocla Quarry have been recognised for their excellence and leadership in environmental responsibility at this year’s Golden Gecko awards. The annual awards, run by the Department of Industry and Resources, reward environmental excellence and responsible resource development in Western Australia’s mineral and petroleum resources. HIsmelt Operations was recognised for creating a new steel-making process that creates less pollution and a smaller environmental footprint than conventional blast furnace technology. Nickel producer Minara Resources won its Golden Gecko for developing a framework for mine site closure and rehabilitation using key performance indicators. Kings Park and Botanic Gardens and Rocla Quarry Products, which has five quarries in the Perth metropolitan area, were recognised for the rehabilitation of Banksia woodland at Rocla’s sand-producing quarries. A certificate of merit was also presented to Rio Tinto Iron Ore for minimising environmental impacts from the Lang Hancock Railway. The Golden Gecko awards have been awarded since 1992
