Golden Gecko nominations in

FIFTEEN companies operating across Western Australia’s resources sector have nominated for the 2004 Golden Gecko Awards for Environmental Excellence.

The entrants are the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association, ARC Energy, BHP Billiton Iron Ore, BGM Management, BHP Billiton Iron Ore/CSIRO, BP Refinery Kwinana, Cable Sands, Christmas Island Phosphates, Inpex Browse, Newmont’s Bronzewing and Yandal operations, Barrick Gold, Tiwest Joint Venture, Woodside Energy and Worsley Alumina.

The awards recognise companies that have made an outstanding contribution to the State by balancing environmental responsibility with the successful development of WA’s resources.

Department of Industry and Resources director Jim Limerick said the awards symbolised company or individual commitment to go far beyond basic compliance with regulations.

"By recognising these advances and innovations in environmental practice by the minerals and petroleum industries, the department seeks to encourage continuous improvement and the development of confidence in the compatibility of mining and environmental management," he said.

The awards are in their 13th year.
