GenusPlus wins $30m FMG contract

Fortescue Metals Group has contracted GenusPlus Group for key infrastructure works at its US$450 million solar and gas Pilbara Generation project.

The power and telecommunications contractor secured the $30 million contact for work at the project, located 26 kilometres west of the Iron Bridge magnetite project, which reached first production on Monday.

The Pilbara Generation project, which is the next stage of FMG’s Pilbara Energy Connect program, consists of 275 kilometres of high voltage transmission lines connecting the company’s mine sites.

The operation is designed to compliment the US$250 million Pilbara Transmission project announced in 2019 and is expected to provide low-cost power to the Iron Bridge project.

GenusPlus will complete direct current reticulation works, install power conversion stations and access platforms, install auxiliary equipment, supply and install overhead lines and fibre optic cables and substation modification works.

Works are expected to get underway immediately, with GenusPlus deploying about 80 personnel for the scope of work.

Construction is tipped to be completed in the 2024 financial year.

Managing director David Riches said the company welcomed the opportunity to further their relationship with FMG.

“We are delighted to secure this Pilbara Generation project contract and continue to build on our long and successful relationship with Fortescue,” he said.

“This contract is the second $30 million plus contract won in the last month, which continues the strong conversion of our $1.4 billion tender pipeline to orderbook heading into FY2024.”

In April, GenusPlus won a $30 million contract from Rio Tinto for the design, supply and installation of overhead lines and other infrastructure at the Western Range project in the Pilbara.
