Imports increase

AUSTRALIAN merchandise imports increased almost 10 per cent during August – a 21 per cent rise on a year ago, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The strongest rises were concentrated in manufactured imports. Imports rose from $9.7 billion in July to $10.7 billion in August with notable contributors being electronic goods and components, apparel and oil.

Marina works starts

START of major construction of the $220 million Mandurah Ocean Marina would be a turning point for tourism in Mandurah, according to Lands Minister Doug Shave. High-powered water pumps have started de-watering the northern half of the existing harbour which is expected to be drained within two weeks.

Leasing guide

A NEW guide for people considering leasing business premises has been launched by the Small Business Minister, Hendy Cowan. The guide, Leasing Business Premises – A Commercial and Practical Guide, was developed by the Small Business Development Corporation in response to demand from the small business sector. Mr Cowan said leasing could be complex and difficult to understand but it was important business operators armed themselves with comprehensive knowledge before committing to a contract.

CBH upgrade open

A $68 million upgrade of the CBH Esperance Grain Terminal has opened. It features two new shipping spouts that will allow for a significant increase in ship loading rates. The upgraded terminal is believed to be equivalent in technology, design and construction to other facilities around the world. CBH has also drawn more than 2,000 grain growers to its corporate restructure meetings. Growers are expected to vote on CBH’s new corporate structure on September 28 and 29.
