Mandurah’s 62-year-old traffic bridge will be replaced with a new four-lane bridge over the estuary, with the state government having secured the $51.8 million it needs to fund the project.

Georgiou Group, Lend Lease and the OHL/York joint venture have previously been short-listed to provide concept designs for the new bridge, with a contract to be awarded for its construction around September.

The new bridge will be double the size of the current one and includes a wide pedestrian walkway.

The state government has allocated $40 million to the project, while the City of Mandurah contributed $3 million and the outstanding $8.8 million came from the Royalties for Regions program.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the Royalties for Regions investment would enable the replacement bridge to have additional features such as a higher clearance for bigger boats to pass under and recreational facilities such as fishing platforms.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said the bridge played a significant role in Mandurah’s history, particularly for fishing, crabbing and prawning.

About 24,000 vehicles travel daily over the two-lane bridge, which links Mandurah City and the commercial centre on the east side of the estuary to residential and coastal areas on the west.
