Those working late in the city Friday night can pack a picnic for the West Australian Opera’s launch of its 2006 season with a free Opera in the Park event at the Supreme Court Gardens. A biblical legend will be brought back to life in Saint Saens’ Samson and Delilah performed by the West Australian Opera Chorus and accompanied by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. The performance about a famous philistine temptress combines risqué Baccchanale ballet, popular arias and an explosive climax in an irresistible feast for the senses. Last year’s Opera in the Park enchanted an audience of over 18,000 with its successful production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. From humble beginnings in 1990 with crowds of 8,000 the popular free summer event has become a permanent fixture in Perth’s social diary.
