Magellan Metals has lodged a $5 million bond with the state government, which paves the way for the miner to start sealed lead shipments through the Fremantle port.

In a statement today, Magellan said it expects to start the shipments by either the end of the month or early October.

Lead from the miner's Wiluna mine will be sealed in two-tonne bags, which are then vacuumed before being placed inside bolt-locked steel containers.

The containers are then washed and trucked from Wiluna to Leonora, and then transported by rail to Fremantle.

The shipment process is one of the strictest in the world, a method devised by Magellan after the lead contamination saga in Esperance.

The sealed shipments have been already been tested at the Port of Esperance earlier this year, when it was used to remove 8,000 tonnes of lead carbonate that was stockpiled at the port after the outbreak of the saga.

The $5 million performance bond payment comes one month after Environment Minister Donna Faragher gave her approval to the shipments.
