Former managing director and chair of Alcoa of Australia Michael Parker has been appointed chief executive of Fremantle Ports.
Mr Parker has worked in senior roles at Alcoa of Australia for the past decade, including as vice president of Alcoa materials management and director of business development and marketing.
He took up the role of chair and managing director in 2015, where he led the company through the lowest commodity cycle in recent history.
Ports Minister Rita Saffioti said Mr Parker’s experience as a senior executive and knowledge of the Western Australian economy would be valuable to the Ports Authority during the Kwinana Port development.
"Mr Parker has spent the majority of a 25 years-plus career with Alcoa of Australia, gaining wide experience in mining and processing, global business operations, commercial management and supply chain optimisation,” she said.
"He has a strong background in strategic planning, corporate governance and workplace culture, which I'm confident will further strengthen Fremantle Ports' capacity to meet challenges and take advantage of trade opportunities in the years ahead.”
Mr Parker has been recognised for his role promoting and empowering women in the workplace and was awarded the 2019 Chamber of Minerals and Energy Western Australia Women in Resources Champion and the 2019 Gender Diversity Champion at the Rio Tinto Women in Resources National Awards.
He starts his new role this week.
