Esperance port boss knew of spill

THE port boss at the time thousands of birds started dying around Esperance told an inquiry last week that he knew lead was spilled in the area. Esperance Port Authority chief executive Colin Stewart, who announced his retirement in May following a lead contamination crisis earlier this year, told a WA parliamentary inquiry into the lead contamination he did not report lead spillages to the board, but the WA environment department was informed.
